For today's #TBT, we go back to when it was way too cold to weld and inspect Tower Shoes for two towers in a field east of Rowatt, SK, in January 2023.

After reviewing all specifications, I had our weld engineer write a procedure to ensure our 1 ¼” fillet welds would not crack due to the nature of the work. Dynamo mobilized and worked with SPC’s surveyor to place the shoes in their correct location and started the welding. To ensure there was no moisture in the weld area, we used (4) tiger torches to heat the steel to a minimum of 120℃ and maintained that throughout the entire weld. It took three welders, a case of 3/16” electrodes, and 6 hours for each shoe (112 total passes per shoe, 184’ of weld) from start to finish. We wrapped the shoe in insulation post-weld to slow down the cooling process. The welds were then inspected by 100% visual and 100% mag particle testing to ensure the weld soundness. The job was completed on time and within budget.’
